Join us at “Cruisin’ in the Park” – a Plano Rotary Club event supported by The Plano Conservancy for Historic Preservation, Inc., the Historic Downtown Plano Association, and the Collin County Master Gardeners to celebrate Plano and National Historic Preservation Month on Saturday, May 12th in downtown Plano at Haggard Park!

Enjoy a fun-filled day for kids and parents, most activities are free!

The event’s DJ and emcee will be Al Johnson of Carrollton, accomplished singer, actor, public speaker director and educator. Local favorite Colton Jacobson of Frisco will perform the national anthem and will be singing his debut single “Last Forever” and other favorites throughout the event. Chrissy Harrold, a rising young star from McKinney, will also be taking the stage during the event to make her downtown Plano debut.

Kids can sign up to race a real soap box derby car (with parent permission)!

Cars will be provided by the Rotary Club.  This will operate under local rules intended to pack the most fun and the least hassle into this exciting driving experience.  See a brief summary of the rules below.  A complete set of rules will be available at the event.

This year’s new format lets any qualified child race in a Rotary Club car  for only $5 without having to build or bring their own car.

When and Where?

Saturday, May 12, 2012.

The race course will run north to south on Ave H, between 16th St and 15th St.

Registration will be in the parking lot at the southwest corner of H Ave and 16th Street in downtown Plano.

Registration opens at 8:00 am.  Racing begins at 8:30 am and will run continuously until 1 pm.  Participants will be assigned to cars and specific heats as they sign in and registrants will race in the order of their registration.

Racing trophies for the Challenger Class will be presented at 1:15 pm at the Registration Desk.

Drivers can compete in two classes:

Cruiser Class $5.00:  Participants will drive an authentic Soap Box Derby race car down a 600 foot track, competing with another driver in a parallel lane.  They will receive a record of their official heat time and either a Winner’s Ribbon or Honorable Mention Ribbon for their heat.

Challenger Class $12.00: Participants will race in a series of 3 heats and receive a heat time for each of their three runs.  The three racers with the lowest average heat time across the three heats will receive trophies, and the next seven runners up will receive ribbons.  (Improve your chances!  You can purchase additional heats on race day, and give yourself the chance to lower your overall average time.)

What are the rules?

Youth between the ages of 7 and 17, weighing less than 125 pounds are eligible.

Youth must be able to safely fit within the racer.  A Soapbox Derby car will be available at the sign in desk to ensure that the driver can fit.

Youth must wear a helmet (helments will be provided if needed)

A parent must be present when the youth registers, and must sign a release form.

The race director is the final authority regarding participant eligibility, winner selection, and all other matters pertaining to the conduct of the race.
